If you’ve ever experienced the electric atmosphere of a Kensington Street Block Party then you know their 2018 Lunar New Year celebration is not to be missed! Taking place on Saturday 17th February, the entire Kensington Street precinct will ignite the senses in a magnificent celebration of Sydney’s diverse Chinese culture and all things pooch-themed, to bark in the Year of the Dog.
Immerse yourself in an intoxicating mix of sights, tastes, smells and sounds as Kensington Street throws a party to tribute man’s best friend, like no other. Effortlessly fusing a traditional exploration of Chinese New year celebrations with modern touches, Lunar New Year at Kensington Street will be kaleidoscope of immersive experiences – a place to discover a new way to party!
To mark the Year of the Dog, Kensington Street will be paying tribute to our furry friends by welcoming all dogs to join their owners for the celebrations! Kensington Street has partnered with Sydney Dogs and Cats Home for the event, with dog adoption ambassadors attending to share their experiences and talk through the adoption process. The Dog House in House 48 will be a puppy haven, where you can partake in Pooches and Pinot. There will also be some seriously adorable shelter animals who are looking for their new family.
If you bring your own four-legged friend down to the Street, be sure to snap a family picture with one of the pet photographers who will be there on the night. The picture will then be sent digitally, making a beautiful memento of your family’s special, pooch-themed outing. Or, if you prefer a souvenir with a handcrafted touch, a dog caricaturist will be on hand to sketch your pup’s portrait!
Kensington Street have crafted a thrilling array of Lunar New Year entertainment offerings, ensuring a celebration to remember. From the beautiful melodies of Chinese Opera Singers to floating DJs mixing up beats amongst the historic terraces, calligraphy workshops, fortune tellers, lantern making classes, Kung Fu workshops and Chinese Youth League dance performances. There will be something for everyone to embrace amongst the festivities. There will also be an enthralling performance from the Lion Dancers – everyone’s favourite – who will impart good luck and blessings of prosperity for the year ahead. The Lunar New Year Kensington Street celebration will be an epic culmination of food, drink and entertainment, with all Kensington Street venues set to offer a range of specials and exclusives. Old Jim Kee will be doing a pop-up in House 28 for the entire Lunar New Year Period selling a colourful selection of traditional Chinese New Year gifts and delicacies. KOI Dessert Bar will showcase exclusive Lunar New Year desserts that are sure to be sell-out sensations. Handpicked Cellar Door will offer free Downward Dog Yoga classes, or if singing up a storm is more your style, Spice House will hold a 90’s Who Let the Dogs Out karaoke session, to party the night away.
